Located less than an hour south of Seoul, Suwon offers a refreshing change of pace. Instead of rushing through crowded shopping districts, you'll find centuries-old fortress walls, peaceful walking paths, and one of Korea's most stunning modern libraries, all in one city.

Unlike Seoul's fast-paced atmosphere, Suwon feels more spacious and laid-back. It's the perfect destination when you want a break from busy tourist attractions without traveling too far.
How to Get to Suwon from Seoul:
The simplest option is riding the Seoul Metropolitan Subway.
Route: Seoul Station → Line 1 → Suwon Station
Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour
Fare: Around ₩1,500–2,000 depending on your starting station.
Once you arrive at Suwon Station, buses and taxis make it convenient to reach the city's attractions.
If you're comfortable navigating Korea's subway system, this is one of the easiest DIY day trips you can take. We took the bus from Suwon Station going to Hwaseong Fortress.
My Relaxing Suwon Day Trip Itinerary
Morning: Exploring Hwaseong Fortress
One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Suwon was Hwaseong Fortress. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site built during the Joseon Dynasty.
Instead of feeling like a crowded tourist attraction, it felt peaceful. Walking along the fortress walls gave me time to slow down and appreciate a different side of Korea.
I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes because you'll be walking quite a bit, especially if you plan to explore several sections of the fortress.

One thing I enjoyed about Suwon was that the area didn't feel overwhelmingly touristy. It was easy to find places where locals were dining, making the experience feel more authentic. You'll have plenty of options within walking distance.
If you enjoy café hopping, Haenggung-dong is also nearby and filled with aesthetic cafés and boutique shops.
Afternoon: Starfield Library Suwon
As someone who loves journaling and spending time in bookstores and libraries, this quickly became one of my favorite stops in Suwon.
Even if you don't plan on reading, it's worth visiting simply to admire the architecture and take photos.
