Ultimate South Korea travel guide for first-time visitors

South Korea has been on my travel bucket list for the longest time. If you're planning your first trip to South Korea, this guide covers everything I learned: from pre-trip preparation to navigating Seoul like a local.

Preparing for your South Korea Trip

Before packing your outfits and planning your itinerary, there are a few important things to prepare.

1.Travel Documents

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Confirmed round-trip flight ticket
  • Accommodation booking
  • Travel itinerary
  • Travel insurance (highly recommended)

Immigration officers sometimes ask for proof of these, so it's best to have them ready.

  • South Korean visa - I processed mine through Korean Visa Application Center (KVAC)

Prepare Your Visa Requirements

Before submitting your application, you need to prepare several documents.

From my experience and research, here are a few tips:

  • Apply 1–2 months before your trip
  • Double-check every document and form
  • Make sure your employment and financial documents are consistent
  • Keep copies of everything

Visa approval ultimately depends on the embassy’s evaluation, but submitting complete and accurate documents greatly improves your chances.

Common requirements for a C-3-9 tourist visa include:

  • Completed Korean visa application form
  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Passport-size photo
  • Photocopy of passport bio page
  • Certificate of Employment (for employed applicants)
  • Financial documents
    • Bank Certificate with ADB last 6 months
    • Bank Statements (last 3 months)
  • BIR 2316 / ITR

Depending on your status, you may also need additional documents such as:
  • Student certificate or student ID
  • Business registration (for self-employed applicants)
  • Income tax return (ITR) for employed applicants

Make sure everything is complete before submitting your application because missing documents can delay processing. Once your documents are ready, you can submit them at the visa center located in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Most applicants apply in person, but there are other options:

  • Accredited travel agencies
  • Courier services available nationwide for tourist visas

For courier applications, applicants can submit documents through W-Express branches, which will deliver the requirements to the visa center.

KVAC service fee: ₱900 for regular processing. If you opt to avail the premium lounge to skip long lines, there is a premium fee of ₱2,000 on top of the ₱900.

Processing usually takes around two to three weeks, depending on the volume of applications. You will receive a notification once your passport is ready for release. If you opted for courier delivery, your passport and visa will be delivered to your address.

My visa processing timeline:

  • Applied via KVAC in BGC: January 5, 2026
  • Visa approved: January 21, 2026
  • Claimed my passport January 27, 2026 (I received a text that I can pick up my passport January 21, but my only availability to pick up was Jan 27)

You can download your visa through https://www.visa.go.kr
  • Check Application Status → Check Application Status & Print
  • Fill in the following details:
    • Application Type: Diplomatic Office
    • Passport Number
    • Name (exactly as in passport)
    • Date of Birth

South Korea no longer places a visa sticker on passports. Instead, immigration checks the digital Visa Grant Notice, so it’s best to print one copy or save a copy on your phone

You may need to show it when boarding your flight or during immigration in South Korea.

2. Essential apps to download

  • Naver Map – the best navigation app in Korea
  • Papago – amazing Korean translation app
Google Maps works, but Korean map apps are far more accurate.

3. Transportation Card
  • T-Money
    • Subways
    • Buses
    • Convenience stores
  • Climate Card
    • For Seoul Metro only

Transportation rule in South Korea: always tap in, and then tap out

4. Internet Access

  • I always buy E-Sim in Klook (use my code SHYIEE7KLOOK for discount!) because it's easier to setup and saves me from the hassle. I can activate it before departure from my home country, and when I connect to mobile data when I land, I can immediately access the internet. I used to buy a physical sim card but if you're flying to Incheon via red eye flights, Klook booths are already closed. I have never tried renting a pocket wifi because I often read traveler's post that they forgot to surrender their pocket wifi and they have to pay fees.

My travel tips:
  • Always tap your T-money card when entering and exiting buses.
  • Escalator rule: Stand on the right side and leave the left side for people walking.
  • Trash bins are very rare. Carry a small trash bag in your bag.

My trip to South Korea was everything I imagined and more historic palaces, dreamy libraries, delicious food, and endless aesthetic spots. Honestly? I already want to go back. If you’re planning your own trip, I hope this guide helps you feel more prepared and excited for your adventure. Trust me, once you experience Seoul, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.
